The quality of digital printing is low but noticeably worse than offset – especially in full coverage, i. e. apples. The costs of digital printing place it in the order of one to several hundred printouts for an identical print, as offset is still more cost effective for larger print runs.
A major disadvantage is the small paper size. Digital printers operating in electrophotographic technology are still more rare than B3.
Controversy about the term’ digital printing’
The characteristics of digital printing are given above. In practice, however, this term is abused for a whole range of other applications, the common denominator of which is only a significant contribution of the computer to the preparation of the printing form. Thus, in a conventional way, the following technologies are also called digital printing:
- Risography – the technology of supplying data in computer form to a printing machine. However, this technology creates a printing form inside the device, which is then automatically inserted into the printing unit.
- CtPress – a typical offset printing, in which the print image is applied (and fixed once on the scale of the print run) to a printing form already fixed in the printing unit. CtPress is a printing machine integrated into the CtP.
- CtP Technology – a technology that consists in the computerised marking of a print image directly on a printed form, but outside the printing machine.

Summary – brochures printing technology
Digital printing is used where print runs are so small that it is not cost-effective to use offset, but a similar quality is expected. The high level of this quality is visible not only in colour printing, but also in black text itself. Typical digital printing applications include short series of conference materials, advertising and business materials, reports, etc. and the entire spectrum of accident printing. Particular attention should be paid to the possibility of personalization of prints. The same bookbinding technologies are used for digital printing as for other types of printing.
